At its meeting on May 6, the municipal committee of Munich’s city council agreed to name a street after the German designer Otl Aicher. The proposal goes back to a motion in 2002 by city councilwoman Christine Strobl (SPD), the current 2nd mayoress. The chosen street is located in municipal district 12 Schwabing-Freimann. By its right-angled course, the street connects the Leopoldstraße and the Domagkstraße. In the vicinity, other streets had already been named after important representatives of designing disciplines such as architecture, graphic design or product design.
KMS TEAM started the initiative “Munich needs an Otl Aicher Street” in February 2008 with the aim of drawing attention to the designer’s accomplishments. Designers from Munich and its surroundings became involved, and numerous citizens expressed their support on the www.otl-aicher-strasse.de website. With the new name, the immediate goal is now achieved, but further activities in honor of Otl Aicher are planned.
