The university has published its research magazine twice a year since 2012 with a print run of 6,000 issues. Each edition is dedicated to a different topic relevant to society. The first issue focused on the topic of »Old & Young«, and contained a variety of articles that illustrated the wide range of research work conducted by the university. KMS TEAM created the overall and design concept for the magazine as part of the corporate design relaunch for the University of Heidelberg.
The design concept combines history with a vision of the future. The modern Trade Gothic typeface meets the traditional university seal of Ruperto Carola. The red in the seal plays an important role as a type color, and helps make the publication easy to read. Overall, the layout has a vibrant, fresh and confident look. The publication features large-format images that pick up on unique perspectives of each topic, catch the readers’ attention and guide them to the content.
The striking visual identity was honored with this year’s iF Communication Design Award.
